Emma declines to trade on Roberts family name

Emma Roberts is an overachiever as an actress, but an under-performer as a famous personality. And she wants to keep it that way.

"I've recently started this thing where I go quietly with the flow, so (I hope) that works out for me," says the 20-year-old from L.A.

Maybe she's navigating under the radar, because she has witnessed the aftermath of fame's bright glare, suffered by her infamous actor-father, Eric Roberts, and her movie-star aunt, Julia Roberts.

Whatever the reason, the next-generation Roberts has managed to avoid the trap of portraying either a girlfriend in a special-effects blockbuster or a sexy lass in a big-budget R-rated romp.

Indeed, she is stubbornly focused on pleasing herself, not on enticements offered by the persuasive film industry.

Case in point is The Art of Getting By, which just opened after a preview at last winter's Sundance Film Festival, under the title Homework.

In the low-key teen comedy, Roberts plays a seemingly happy Sally, who is, deep down, a disenfranchised student in New York. She befriends schoolmate George (Freddie Highmore, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), a sullen, apathetic procrastinator with more talent than desire.

They bond, and slowly discover there might be more to their futures than they thought.

"It's a subtle love story, and that was appealing to me," says Roberts.

As an added bonus, she connected with Highmore, and with first-time movie director Gavin Wiesen, who also wrote the screenplay.

"I definitely could not have done this without Freddie," says the actress, who was impressed with the London-born Highmore's mastery of an American dialect. "The only challenges, really, were the logistics of shooting all over New York for a month."

Rounding out the cast are some seasoned actors. Blair Underwood shows up as a concerned principal. Former teen star Alicia Silverstone plays a teacher. Sam Robards is George's stepfather.

"We all got along very well," says Roberts. "Everybody seemed to click."

Emma Roberts' teen role complex

One of the reasons Hollywood loves to portray high school life -- aside from all the young nubile bodies -- is because the characters are so easily categorized. Who needs complex, three-dimensional teenagers when you have ready-made labels like nerd, jock, cheerleader, Goth, etc.?

"In life, it's not like that," says Emma Roberts.

Which is one of the reasons, she explains, why she signed onto the Sundance indie The Art of Getting By, which is now playing across Canada. In the coming-of-age drama, she plays Sally, a popular teenager who befriends a lonely but bright student named George (Freddie Highmore).

"Someone can be a nerd and be popular," Roberts says. "Someone can be smart and be funny. In movies they are so put into these pockets. (Sally) is very real to me "¦ I feel like my character was popular and pretty, but there was a lot more going on than that."

IN SIMPATICO: It's no D--- in a Box, but in Bad Teacher, Justin Timberlake again gets to sing for laughs.

"I've put my body on the line for comedy. Why not put my voice on the line for comedy?" says the pop star-turned-actor.

In the movie, Timberlake plays a teacher who, while dating a fellow instructor (Lucy Punch), serenades her with a wretched love song entitled Simpatico.

"I just tried to create the most terrible melody that I could. The mission was to make it so bad they would not be able to market it in the trailer. It was completely a collaboration."

Says director Jake Kasdan, "There was an enormous advantage having Justin playing the part obviously because nobody is funny singing like he is."

Bad Teacher continues Timberlake's push to be taken seriously as a movie star.

Next month he stars in the romantic comedy Friends with Benefits.

Production is scheduled to begin July 5 in the Soo on the $10-million feature Foxfire.

No, it's not the story of a web browser. That would be Firefox. Foxfire is an adaptation of a Joyce Carol Oates story about a teen girl gang in the '50s, previously made in 1996 with a young Angelina Jolie as one of the stars. This version, the English-language debut of French director Laurent Cantat (The Class), features a cast of unknowns.

JUST SAY 'NOAH!' It isn't a Biblical quote, but it's worth remembering nonetheless -- George Santayana's, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

It is with the news that Steven Soderbergh has in mind a $130-million production of the story of Noah's Ark.

This is probably as good a time saw any to remind Soderbergh that the last big-screen attempt at the Noah theme -- the 2007 Steve Carell movie Evan Almighty -- ended up costing roughly $200 million, and was one of the box-office bombs of the decade.

Freddie Highmore and Emma Roberts: Hollywood’s honor roll

Freddie Highmore couldn’t be more different than George, the overcoat-clad high school underachiever he plays in the new coming-of-age film “The Art of Getting By.” 

“Freddie’s the genius,” teases Emma Roberts of her costar, who began his acting career at the age of 7 and starred in films such as “Finding Neverland” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” all while maintaining a normal school life. The Cambridge University student is so into his course work he doesn't know if he'd choose acting over another profession.

"I'm still carrying on with schooling. I haven’t had to make a definite decision as to if this is what I want to do for the rest of my life, so I get to put that off for a few more years," says Highmore.

 “I was more like George. I was a bit of a slacker,” says Roberts, who after her big break at age 12 on Nickelodeon’s “Unfabulous” was homeschooled. “It’s hard to focus when you’re in your pajamas with your laptop and there are so many other things more appealing like laying in bed and watching TV.” 

It wasn’t all lounging, though: The 20 year-old avid reader did get into Sarah Lawrence College, but has deferred for now to concentrate on acting.

Highmore and Roberts are so down to earth and polite you’d never guess both grew up so successful in Hollywood — or with showbiz families. (Highmore’s mom is an agent and Robert’s aunt is well, Julia and her dad is actor Eric Roberts). Unlike other child stars, there’s no half naked cell phone pictures of them floating around online, they’ve never been hit with a DUI or checked into rehab. When asked about the most rebellious thing they’ve done, Highmore is stumped, and Roberts talks about her getting her belly pierced as a teen.

At 20, Emma Roberts has grown up.

In her film “The Art of Getting By” (opening Friday), the alumna of “Hotel for Dogs” and “Nancy Drew” is doing a little smoking and even dates an older artist.

“It was a grown-up character and much more real,” says the niece of superstar Julia Roberts. “In this movie, I’m not the super-duper good girl, but I’m not the bad girl. I’m just a regular girl.”

Roberts and Freddie Highmore play high school seniors looking to start their lives and deal with an unlikely love for each other. Her character’s spoiled mother has divorced her rich stepfather and is even making a few moves on her classmate.

She’s also filming “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” written by Rashida Jones, where she’ll play a pop star.

Emma Roberts Visits "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon"

Drawing an end to the work week with another television appearance, Emma Roberts visited "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" in New York City on Friday evening (June 10).

The always-stylish niece of Julia Roberts took to the Rockefeller Center studios as she sat down to chat about her new movie "The Art of Getting By" - which hits theaters on June 17th.

Emma Roberts Wouldn't Mind Getting Raunchy

Emma Roberts certainly isn't known for doing outlandish comedy, but no matter.

The young starlet wouldn't mind being a part of a Bridesmaids-like flick.

That's just one of the many things we touched upon when I sat down the other day with Roberts and Michael Angarano to talk about their new movie, The Art of Getting By (out June 17), a quirky coming-of-age dramedy about a high school senior (the adorable Freddie Highmore) on the verge of being thrown out of school.

The 20-year-old actress accessorized her bright green dress with House of Lavande vintage lapis and gold earrings and a Kotur clutch.
