The Bling Ring movie review

The Bling Ring was one of the New Zealand International Film Festival films I had been looking forward to see the most. It has gained a lot of hype, especially as it marks a bold step (in the right direction) for actress Emma Watson as she breaks away from the Harry Potter franchise.

Based on Nancy Jo Sales' Vanity Fair article The Suspect Wore Louboutins, and the actual events of the Hollywood Hills burglaries in 2008 - '09, The Bling Ring offers an insight into the world of the teenage robbers.

The 'Bling Ring', as they were often referred to by the media, consisted of a group of celebrity obsessed high-schoolers, who decide to break into the homes of their rich and famous idols. Some of their victims include the likes of Orland Bloom and Miranda Kerr, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, from whom they stole over $3million worth of clothes jewellery and cash.

Director Sofia Coppola, offers her distinct aesthetic style of film making, feeling a lot like her 2006 film Marie Antoinette. Rich with colour and beautifully edited. Cuts of paparazzi footage and Facebook picture uploads reflect the teens desire for fame, yet the grainy filter helps move the film away from the typical glossy Hollywood movie, to put the film itself in contrast with it's content.

Also, bizarrely enough, Paris Hilton let Coppola film inside her home, where only 4-5 years ago the actual home invasions took place.

The young actors bring a believability to their characters, especially actress Katie Chang, playing the unruly ring leader and instigator of the thefts, Rebecca. As well as Israel Broussard as Mark, the stylish teen who gets caught up in Rebecca's exciting and dangerous life style. However at times the dialogue feels a little too contrived, but perhaps that only helps emphasise the shallowness of these Californian teens.

The Bling Ring is entertaining throughout and worth seeing if you get the chance.

Emma Watson bares it in new movie poster

The 22-year-old actress, who is all set to rebel against her innocent do-gooder character in the Harry Potter series, can be seen holding a gun in one of the stills, the Mirror reported. In another snap, the pretty actress shows off her toned stomach and flashes her bra.
Watson told GQ magazine that when she read the script and realised that it was essentially a meditation on fame and what̢۪s become to the society, she decided to do it.

The Half-Blood Prince star, who will be playing the role of Nicki in the film, said that the character is everything that she felt strongly against- it is superficial, materialistic, vain and amoral.
Watson added that she agreed to portray the character of someone she would actually hate because she found it really interesting and it gave her a whole new insight into what her job or her role as an actress could be.

Emma Takes to Facebook!

We reported earlier that Jo, from Emma Watson Official, is asking for suggestions for Emma’s site, or questions you would like to ask Emma. Today, Emma wrote a lovely little post on her Facebook. She posted,“I think when you take away all the premieres and press stuff and all the special effects, then you just come down to the fact that it’s all about acting, and I think that has been the best bit for me.” There were many requests for Emma to post more, and this may just be a sign that more is on it’s way!

Emma also included this picture:

A new photo from The Bling Ring set was posted today on the movies facebook page. And another photo of Emma and Israel Broussard taken by Sofia Coppola from about a month ago that we didn’t post before.

Emma Watson returns to her usual low-key style after playing glamour girl on the set of The Bling Ring

After spending years of her life playing bookworm good girl Hermione Granger, Emma Watson stunned fans with her sudden transformation on the set of her latest film last month.
The actress was spotted on a number of occasions on the set of The Bling Ring in tiny denim hotpants, killer heels and with long brunette hair.
But Emma, 22, looked back to her old self as she ran errands in North London today.

The pretty actress went low-key and comfortable - a far cry from her sexy character Nicki - in jeans, flat boots and a knitted cardigan.

The always-stylish star wore a Peter Pan-collar grey and white top and completed the look with warm scarf.
Emma is back on home turf after spending weeks on the set of The Bling Ring in Los Angeles.

From wizard to WAG! A tattooed Emma Watson wears a pink tracksuit and UGG boots for new movie The Bling Ring

She shot to fame as teenage wizard Hermoine Granger in the Harry Potter film series.
But Emma Watson has embraced an entirely new look for her upcoming movie The Bling Ring.
The 22-year-old actress shared a picture of herself in character as Nicki on the set of the film. However, Emma looked more like a WAG than a wizard in her costume - posing up in a pink tracksuit and UGG boots.

From wizard to WAG! Emma Watson shared a picture of herself in character as Nicki on the set of new movie The Bling Ring on her Twitter page
Emma, who is sporting longer brown hair for the role, teamed her outfit with three tattoos - one on her left forearm, one on her right upper arm, and one on her hip.

Bye bye Hermione! Emma's new look is a long way from her Harry Potter role as Hermione Granger
Emma captioned the picture: 'Twitterers meet Nicki, Nicki meet twitterers : ) @blingringmovie.'
But as well as her differing style in the Jennifer Lopez style casual outfit, what was also noticeably from Emma's Twitter picture was her shrinking frame - as the actress looked tiny in the shot.
Emma has been working hard on the set of the new movie, which also stars Kirsten Dunst and Leslie Mann in Los Angeles recently.
The movie tells the story of The Bling Ring - a group of mostly teenagers based around Calabasas, California who burglarized the homes of several stars, including Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox, Rachel Bilson, Ashley Tisdale and Lindsay Lohan.
Emma's character Nicki has an ex-Playboy model mother, played by Leslie Mann, who schools her two daughters on the importance of finding fame.
Meanwhile, it was reported yesterday that Emma is in talks for a cameo role in Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's End of the World.
Emma has reportedly entered negotiations to play herself in the comedy movie, with Jason Segel and David Krumholtz also set to make guest appearances in the star-studded project, which has the alternative title The Apocalypse.
James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson are also playing themselves in the motion picture, which will see them trapped in James' Los Angeles apartment after an apocalypse breaks out.
The movie – which is currently being filmed and is expected to be released in 2013 - has been inspired by Seth and Jay Baruchel's 2007 short film, Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse, which features the pair starring as themselves.
