Robert Pattinson officially loses Jeff Buckley role to Penn Badgley

It’s official.  Penn Badgley has been cast in the role of Jeff Buckley, a role that Twilight star Robert Pattinson allegedly wanted to play himself.  According to Deadline, on June 20, 2011, Smuggler films made the announcement that Badgley would portray the deceased singer in the movie Greetings from Tim Buckley.
This isn’t the first time that the life of Jeff Buckley will be immortalized on film.  An independent film called Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley actually made its Boston premiere at the Independent Film Festival of Boston on April 22 and 24, 2006.
With Robert Pattinson’s explosive popularity, it’s surprising that he would be turned down for the role of Jeff Buckley.  Greetings from Tim Buckley is reportedly in preproduction.  Limited information is available about the film, including the actors who will play alongside Penn Badgley.  However, IMDb does have the following plot summary posted on their site:
“Greetings from Tim Buckley follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he learns to embrace all of his feelings toward the father who abandoned him – longing, anger, forgiveness, and love. Culminating a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time.”
